FAQ I) General Questions

FAQ I-1) What is GRACE?

GRACE is a computer and file sharing environment aimed at supported classes and research projects. It can provide some modest computational and file resources to support various courses at UMd.

FAQ I-2) How do I get a GRACE space for my course/project?

The professor officially listed as instructing a course can request a GRACE space for that course using the web-based management tool. These requests are automatically granted. If you are a student or a TA for a course, you will need to get your instructor to request the space. If you are looking for a GRACE space for your project, anyone associated with campus can request space using the web-based management tool. These requests are not automatically approved, and require a human to read them. So they might take a few days to be granted. Although students can put in such requests, they are advised to have their professor/advisor submit the request to improve their chances of approval and speed up the process.

FAQ II-1) How do I access GRACE?

GRACE provides both login access and file storage. Depending on the course/project, one or both might be used. Files can be accessed in a variety of ways. Login access is available via ssh.

FAQ II-2) Why can't I log in to the GRACE machines?

Unlike the TerpConnect login machines, access to the GRACE cluster is restricted to people associated with courses and projects using GRACE. Typically, this means that you must be registered for a course which is currently using GRACE. Instructors for the course must have requested a GRACE space for the course, you must be enrolled in the course, and the course must be for the current semester. TAs are not currently automatically granted access; if you are a TA have the professor for the course grant you access via the web-based management tool or have them submit a help ticket to request someone at the Division of Information Technology do it for them.
