Heidi beat me to putting her favorite pictures up, but she left this one out - I think Craig was giving me instructions.

North Dakota Trip, August 15-20, 1997

August was the month for a pilgrimage to America's heartland - specifically, the geographical center of North America: Rugby, N.D. The highway from Bismarck to Bottineau was flanked by the most beautiful continuous stream of yellow daisies. The car was certainly preferred to the wagons of yesterday. The tallest structure in Bottineau is the Farmers Elevator serving the nearby productive Bergman farm. A highlight of the trip was fishing at Lake Metigoshe with Ron Bergman where we caught our limit of Great Northerns!

Colorado Trip, September 21-26, 1997

I was at the CARL User's Meeting in Denver, CO at the end of September and took some photos of the Rockies game where they played San Francisco - nice ball park and had some fun with colleagues and friends. Besides the game, the other big social events were celebrating the earning of an MLS (congrats Zoe!) and a visit to the Wynkoop Brew Pub. After the CARL Meeting, I rented a car and traveled to Colorado Springs where I visited cousin Laura Teigen Johnson and her husband Dick. A Hardanger dress from Laura's side of the family. I walked around Garden of the Gods with its beautiful red sandstone rocks and views (15) (17) (23) (24). I drove up Pikes Peak , walked around Crystal Reservoir , and hiked around the top looking at the views (14) (11)

Uncle Spud's Birthday Party, November 22, 1997

Spud and Verny came up to Falls Church, VA to see Gary Childs get sworn in for his State Department post. The visit coincided with his birthday so Anita had a party and invited friends who they had known in Panama and the Philippines. Here's Eric presenting the cake (is that a halo on hishead?). The highlight of the evening was eating a durien which Gary and I got at the local Asian market. Spud did the honors of serving. I think Marty Lessmann doesn't like the taste OR the smell of durien.
