School Library Media ProgramThe School Library Media Program (SLMP) is a specialization housed within the overall M.L.S. degree program offered by the College of Information Studies of the University of Maryland. Students in the specialization (1) earn the M.L.S. degree and (2) receive the educational preparation necessary for certification as School Library Media Specialists by the State of Maryland. The CLIS program is accredited or approved by all appropriate national and state agencies--including the American Library Association (ALA), the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the Maryland State Department of Education. While there is no direct reciprocity for library media certification in individual states throughout the country, the CLIS program generally meets or exceeds the certification requirements for library media personnel in many other states. Graduates of the SLMP work in all levels of education in Maryland and the surrounding region, in localities across the United States, and in other countries as well. Approved by the College in 2001 after a three-year program review, the current SLMP curriculum is consistent with the latest certification requirements of the State of Maryland (C.O.M.A.R., Section 13A12.03.03, 2001) and with the latest national guidelines and standards for school library media programs (Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, 1998). Requirements include:
Students who do not have teaching backgrounds must take two additional courses (beyond the 36 hours required for the M.L.S. degree), one in learning theory and one in classroom techniques. Individualized advising ensures that students craft programs that will meet their individual career plans as well as the requirements of the College and the specialization.
